Inorganic ink consists of the main ingredient called iron oxide. It occurs in mixtures with other metal-containing acids, such as mercury, lead, and arsenic. In addition, organic ink contains preservatives, perfumes, and other additives that can cause serious problems when they come into contact with the skin.

The oxides of zinc and iron provide opacity, which means that they provide a solid colour that is not transparent. However, eyebrows change colour over time due to the high iron content.
